IFPE was first staged in 1984 at Chicago's McCormick Place. It was called the International Fluid Power Exposition and was held every four years up to the 2000 Show. Starting with the 2000 event, the show name changed to IFPE - International Exposition for Power Transmission to include electrical and mechanical components and systems. Past shows have featured fluid power exhibits and technical conferences including the National Conference on Fluid Power (NCFP) and International Fluid Power Applications Conference (IFPAC), four applications centers (industrial, mobile, pneumatic and high performance), symposiums on hydraulic fluids, comparative motion control technology and hydraulic system maintenance and troubleshooting, international pavilions and student day.
In 1992 and 1996, the show co-located with the International Welding and Fabricating Expo, and in 1996 also co-located with Motion Expo. In 2000 the show partnered with Hannover Fairs Inc. Beginning in 2002, IFPE is co-located with the CONEXPO-CON/AGG exposition, the Western Hemisphere's largest exposition for the construction and construction materials industries, and will be held on the 3-year cycle of CONEXPO-CON/AGG. IFPE is North America's largest international exposition and technical conference dedicated to power transmission systems, components and controls (hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical and electrical).
